Tianya Haijiao |
Tianya Haijiao, located at the foot of Xiama Hill in the town of Tianya about 24 km west of Sanya, is this beautiful and unique place that has attracted endless tourists from all over the world.
Here, you will find numerous rocks in different sizes and shapes, scattered all along the silvery beach. The most famous rocks are the ones marked with the Chinese characters “Tainya Haijiao (end of the earth and corner of the sea) and “Nantian Yizhu” (the huge rock that emerges from the sea).
Legend has it that there were two lovers from two hostile families who escaped here. One of them was named “Tianya” and the other “Haijiao”. They swore to never separate no matter what and thus, when they were pursued by their families, they lept into the sea from this spot. People believe that the couple later changed into two huge rocks, which stand facing the sea. Because of this romantic story, many lovers come here to declare their undying love for one another.
During China’s long feudal history, this place served as the penal colony for the criminals. During the Song dynasty, some officials were banished here for speaking against the regime. For them, the uninhabited wilderness of this area must have felt like the “end of the earth”.
Nearby, there is also a Pearl Farm where you can purchase Hainan's famous seawater pearls.
